So, I went to a show again yesterday. It was pretty impulsive, saw the poster on the previous show and it looked like fun. I had no idea what to expect.
So I got introduced to some quiet music. No punkrock this time. Vulnerable acoustic guitar songs, entrancing piano-enforced soundscapes and heart-crushing electric guitar compositions.
Definitely worth the 5 euros. It was a show by NachtKracht, in the Depot's former Popacademie, a last minute locational change. Really cool of these guys to put up such shows.
It was a cold place, but generally the atmosphere was cosy. Some seats, a carpet to sit on and a small, intimate podium. Everyone was in it for the music, mostly twenty-something dudes and mostly hipster-kids, and it's cool to see people coming out to get entertained without horrible techno music and druuuuuuugs.
Sooo, Love Like Birds started the jams. She has a really cool voice, vulnerable and a bit husky, sexy and touching. She has no own guitar but borrowed her sister's. She is pretty. Her songs are piercing, going straight to every inch of your body and finally her heart reaches the audience's heart, in song. I was really impressed by her music, the voice with the guitar, and by her lyrics. That's probably because I only listen to 3 singer/songwriters alike, and I am generally easily impressed, but it definitely is worth checking out. There's also a splendid Elliott Smith cover on the myspace page.
Really cool performance, a lot of emotion, including happy songs hidden in sad songs "because [she] isn't good at writing happy songs". Really friendly gal, appreciative of her audience and so on. She gives you shivers and makes you smile. At the same time.
For fans of sad music.
Library Tapes came up next. This Swedish guy surely is doing his thing. With a laptop and a piano he created soundscapes invoking awe throughout the room. This is not my cup of tea, but for some reason he got my attention at the show. I probably wouldn't listen to any of his 8-or-so CDs more than once or twice, but live, with the atmosphere going on, seeing the guy playing his piano and arranging his music, it was quite impressive. I didn't get bored all that much so that's a good indicator. Check it!
For fans of weird music.
I was told that Rivulets would be great. So obviously, I was really psyched to see him perform. He is a man with a guitar and a voice. Beautiful. Heart-felt singing, some great lyrics, great compositions. A truly genuine type of music. This man could silence an army with his music. (Although a few might talk a bit, to which he'll sing you to "shut the fuck up"). The simplistic musical set-up is used to cross bounds and amaze with a variation of intruiging songs. I don't know if that means anything, but it's true.
He has a lot of songs up for download on his website, as well as quite a few CDs, so if you like it, support it.
For fans of sad music.
So yeah, open up your mind to some mellow music, and if you don't like it, you can always put your Ramones cd back on.

UK Skatepunk invasion
New term, back to normal times, I can go to shows again, without worrying about other things.
So yesterday I went out to celebrate Jare's (of State Of Mine fame) birthday. The party took place in the Rock Café in Leuven. I have been to a couple shows there and always had a lot of fun. Sunday night was no exception.
As far as technical skatepunk goes, I really like This Is A Standoff (and Belvedere), Bedtime For Charlie and probably another band. I'm no expert, but there are some really good bands in the genre. To discover those, I have to go to shows because I'm internet-lazy. And Myspace sucks nowadays.
Laughing In The Face Of started off the night with a lot of good riffs and beats, reminiscing of This Is A Standoff - especially vocally. Really impressive. Maybe not the most original skatepunk band I have heard, but they are really good musicians and performers.
They also like weed. A lot.
Truro is a weird name. I don't know what it means. It doesn't matter really. The sound in the venue wasn't really great, so that may have done away with some of the impression of the live show. But overall, I wasn't all that much into this band. Descent, but they didn't stand out.
The Fair Do's, on the other hand, were really, really awesome. Great show, they got me headnodding, maybe dancing for a moment. Fast, melodic, raging. Sometimes they sounded like regular heavy metal with punk rock melodies, but it worked. Some influences from hardcore, which they use to create a distinct sound. Cool!
Each band has demos/eps out and/or albums coming out. Support them, go see a show or buy some merch.
They also all talk/sing really British English. Or "non-normal English", as I was told during the show.

4 years after a re-release of their debut album, Chixdiggit! from Canada have stepped up their game with their much anticipated new EP, Safeways Here We Come.

Their first release was a demo tape called Humped, with recordings that would later end up on 'real albums', except the HIV song. I Should Have Played Football In Highschool turned up on the EP Best Hung Carrot In The Fridge, among other introductory songs to the sound that Chixdiggit! would perfect. The songs sound a bit messy every once in a while, but the originality is definitely there. It's pop punk with an edge.
Their George Michael cover is also noteworthy.
They get picked up by Sub Pop Records and in 1996 a fabulous self-titled album is released. This turns out to be a great, fun pop-punk album. Witty lyrics, great hooks, good overall songwriting. It includes classics such as I Wanna Hump You and Where's You Mom? Very enjoyable, danceable, singalongable popped up punk rock.
This was re-recorded and re-released in 2007 as Chixdiggit! II and featured 2 more songs. The new recording and production suit the band, who had obviously evolved a lot in those 10 years. Definitely not a waste! The artwork is really cool as well, for both versions in fact.
Back to 1998. Honest Don's, a Fat Wreck Chords subdivision releases Born On The First Of July, generally considered their best album. It has a lot of hits, most noteably My Restaurant, Quit Your Job, Chupacabras and Sikome Beach, but every song is killer, really. This could be one of those album who are perfect. Probably, I'm not sure. It could be. No fuss, just rock. Just doing their thing.
After 2 re-releases of Best Hung Carrot… (on CD and on 10" vinyl) and a split with Groovie Ghoulies on which they do 2 Boomtown Rats cover and a awesome Ghoulies cover, they yet again surprise the world with From Scene To Shining Scene. This might be a tiny bit underrated sometimes, but it is a personal favourite for sure. I remember being absolutely insane about Moto Foxe. I still get shivers when listening to it. You got me feeling just like everyday's a leap year. I don't know what it means, as with a lot of KJ's lyrics, but it sounds so damn cool. Going To The Peelers does the same. Great album including some of their best songs and some of their equally good songs. (This means all their songs are their best songs.)
So, I think I found out about Chixdiggit! in 2007, when Pink Razors had been released for 2 years. Pink Razors is just a genius continuation of their œuvre. More pop, more punk, more power, more songs. This album is bound to make the listener smile. Good Girls or You're Pretty Good should just ake anyone happy. C.G.I.T. and - from a different perspective - Nobody Understands Me don't achieve the same goal, but are fun/witty in their dramatic way. Nobody Understands Me ends the album with the best keyboard part ever written and performed.
They have played Belgium once since I've known them, but I didn't have the chance to see them then.
And now the almighty Chixdiggit! have returned with Safeways…, an EP that makes you jump around and sing. It makes you eat Japanese food, hate basketball, and reconsider your haircut. It makes you amoureux and horny and distolerate friends with dogs.
Can't wait to see them March 26th! Crossbone Fest in Houthalen, everyone should be there.

Small castle songs
So, Mixtapes have put out 2 more songs. Yes they did. They don't stop.
There are tons of bands who deserve more attention. Mixtapes are getting huge. They're everybody's favourite band. Everybody who has heard of them and is not an idiot, that is.
They put out Castle Songs a couple of days ago. It is 1 minute and 42 seconds long. It has 2 songs. They are awesome.
1. Cause I'm A Genius
2. Hey Baby
First one is a short poppunk song with influences from ska and pizza. (It's actually a cover of the theme song of Zeke & Luther, a show I have never heard of.) It's difficult to sing along, but the lyrics are quite great. Life is awesome. I love pizza. You love pizza.
Hey Baby is a slow acoustic song. They are really good at slow acoustic songs. Really cool melodies, lyrics are tongue-in-cheek humourous, referencing Tim Burton and Strung Out.
These recordings do miss some Maura lead vocals though. But it's awesome. Check it out. Pizza is awesome.

The (Beef) Wellingtons
Has everybody heard about power pop? It's like pop but more powerful. Also better. You might think of bands like Weezer, the Paul Collins' Beat and the Romantics.
From now on, you will also think of bands like The Wellingtons.
In times of massive online downloading and file-sharing it feels weird to say I have only found The Wellingtons third album. I will probably buy this and their other albums some time. I will probably buy all albums I like some time. But there are still tons of bands who haven't seen my money. It's a shame, isn't it.
So, now I got that out of the way and everyone now knows I have downloaded The Wellingtons' album Heading North For The Winter illegally, we can move on to the interesting part of music-related blogs: the music.
UPDATE: As of today (23/01/2011) I have actually ordered their records. That's one less band on the 'list of bands who need my money'.
You should follow my example.

The title "Heading North For The Winter" sounds like a bad black metal album or a mediocre new-wave album. Who would have guessed it actually is a great powerpop album? A first glance on the artwork does in fact tell you a lot about the general feel of the album. Colourful and cute. Not summer-esque but not yet winter-y. Just birds saying "hi!", listening some rock'n'roll music, taking photographs, … It makes you feel good about the world.
The music does this as well. We are introduced by a music-box-melody, which quickly turns into a upbeat, un-unenjoyable anthem for Kim, most probably Kim Shattuck of The Muffs. Immediatly the urge to dance and party arises within me, I feel a desire, nay!, a need to sing along. It has this typical hand-clap rhythm: o-xx-o-x. You must dance. You can't stop it. At least, until the song ends, when it turns into a lengthy melody… But, fortunately, everybody can be happy again and give high-fives to kittens and love life as it is and dance around like un vrai fou when Come Undone kicks in. Probably the album's leading single, together with Song For Kim, which both have semi-professional music videos. You can see in the videos that their bass player is quite hot, as well as the keyboard player. This undeniably gives bonus points to any band.
Come Undone has a more prominent synth sound, especially in the intro, but it carries the song well. Great song, ultra-catchy. The 3rd song is definitely my favourite, because of the 'pa pa paaa' and the incredible recognition (I [too] Get My Heart broken Everyday) in the lyrics, and foremost because the 'bridge'-part, where the dual vocals come in. I love dual vocals. With a tight, fitting solo, a re-chorus, a generic ending and a non-generic synth solo they finish. Freak Out also has a music video, but this one isn't even semi-professional anymore. But such things exactly feed my appreciation for this band. They work hard and put out great music, and they keep this DIY edge. Totally cool. The song apparently features aforementioned Kim of The Muffs, and it might be a reference to the Muffs' song Freak Out.
The album continues with pulsating pop songs, feelgood powerpop ballads, full of great guitar riffs, awesome rhythms, uplifting keyboard melodies and even some horns in Natalie and One And Off. The catchyness stays, the dancefulness shrinks down a little and the melancholy takes over in the middle of the album. It is a quite short album as well, but that gives it a kind of punkrock feel, and it makes sure it doesn't bore you with filler. Every song is independently good, this is a real deviation from all the same songs I am used to listen. I don't have a good ear, but I have certainly heard more than 3 chords in here.
In the end the catchy-rate goes up again with Waiting For My Time To Come, which starts out as a rock'n'roll jam, but has the most irresistible chorus. On And Off has a poppunk feel to it. It's rather fast-paced, has a steady beat, a little guitar solo and the vocals are more centred and calm. It ends rather magically.
Everyone is now high on love, lost in the realm of power pop music, and wishing they could sleep on rainbows and play tag with unicorn.

This now seems a natural choice, as we can address a greater audience. We believe we have become professional enough to take the step. The preproduction of a possible zine accompanying this blog has started and in the light of this we think it's the best step to take.

Yo, kennen jullie The Manges?
Misschien kennen jullie hun uitstekend debuutalbum "'R' Good Enough" en de rest van hun œuvre. Of hun fantastische liveshow op Monster Zero Mash 2009 (en waarschijnlijk die van 2010).
In 2010 brachten ze Bad Juju uit. Ik kreeg de plaat pas 2 maanden na bestelling in handen. Foutje met de verzending. No big deal. In 2011 had ik dus eindelijk Bad Juju in handen. Prachtige plaat.

Ik ben onder de indruk. Dat is bij elk Manges album zo. Bad Juju werkt van de 1ste keer. Dit is net zo goed als hun andere albums. Dit verveelt niet, dit is pop punk van de bovenste plank. Moet u weten, the Manges bestaan al bijna 20 jaar (sinds 1993 om precies te zijn) en hebben voor Bad Juju slechts 2 full length platen uitgebracht, plus 2 cd-splits en een hoop 7"-splits/ep's. Mijn punt is dat pakweg de Ramones na 18 jaar bijna 12 platen hadden uitgebracht. The Manges doen het met 3. Dat maakt hun albums toch wel enorm geanticipeerd en in zekere zin 'speciaal'.
De naald maakt zijn intrede. Ik wacht benieuwd af. 1 2 3 4 klinkt het. Ik had niet anders verwacht. Het eerste nummer gaat over den oorlog. Ik had niet anders verwacht. De cynische soundclip (van John Jughead van vroege Screeching Weasel) en het idee van een 2-delig nummer kwam wel onverwachts. Het werkt. Ik had op de Monster Zero Mash reeds een eerste indruk van Hit The Punchball gekregen, en het klinkt eens zo goed op het album. Een hoge zang die ik niet gewoon ben is zeker aannemelijk. En dan hebt ge nog - oei 't is al gedaan.
Zo gaat dat in de punkrock hè. Langer dan 2 minuten gaat het niet duren. Het titelnummer steekt meteen van wal, één van de coolste nummers van het album. Coole gitaarriff/-solo en catchy refrein. De verwijzing naar The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy deed me ook glimlachen.
Kant A gaat op hetzelfde elan verder: rap, catchy, plezant, 3 akkoorden en een Italiaans-Engels accent. Back To The Training Camp is geschreven door Ben Weasel van Screeching Weasel (de band die I Will Always Do al coverde op Television City Dream). Een nummer als Motion Picture Rest Home laat ook niks aan de verbeelding over en is misschien wel het enige nummer waarvan ge kunt zeggen "ah, die tekst snap ik en kan ik éénduidig interpreteren". Dat is geen slechte commentaar.
Kant B is aan de beurt. Ik kan niet volgen met de recensie want ik zit al 3 nummers ver en heb nog niks over kant B geschreven. Kant B is evengoed als kant A. Het zijn wel andere nummers maar ze zijn even aanstekelijk. Ik denk aan het refrein van The Last Of The Savages, de solo en de outro van Storming Out, en de strofe van Good Boy, Bad Time. Vooral dat laatste vind ik enorm cool om te horen, het heeft een coole vibe die ik niet kan plaatsen. Kort gestrumde akkoorden, heel ingehouden en ritmisch, bijna gerapt - een invloed van Dee Dee Ramone? Het valt misschien te vergelijken met Mandy. Het heeft één van de coolste teksten op het album, met tekstuele verwijzingen naar Sgt. Mouse Band March (medegeschreven door Danny Vapid van Screeching Weasel) en Back To The Training Camp.
Langs de andere kant, Serenity Now! is waarschijnlijk het meest hardcore nummer dat ze al geschreven hebben.
De conclusie: ik heb die 2 maanden dat die bij de post vast zat heel wat gemist.
Misschien kennen jullie hun uitstekend debuutalbum "'R' Good Enough" en de rest van hun œuvre. Of hun fantastische liveshow op Monster Zero Mash 2009 (en waarschijnlijk die van 2010).
In 2010 brachten ze Bad Juju uit. Ik kreeg de plaat pas 2 maanden na bestelling in handen. Foutje met de verzending. No big deal. In 2011 had ik dus eindelijk Bad Juju in handen. Prachtige plaat.

Ik ben onder de indruk. Dat is bij elk Manges album zo. Bad Juju werkt van de 1ste keer. Dit is net zo goed als hun andere albums. Dit verveelt niet, dit is pop punk van de bovenste plank. Moet u weten, the Manges bestaan al bijna 20 jaar (sinds 1993 om precies te zijn) en hebben voor Bad Juju slechts 2 full length platen uitgebracht, plus 2 cd-splits en een hoop 7"-splits/ep's. Mijn punt is dat pakweg de Ramones na 18 jaar bijna 12 platen hadden uitgebracht. The Manges doen het met 3. Dat maakt hun albums toch wel enorm geanticipeerd en in zekere zin 'speciaal'.
De naald maakt zijn intrede. Ik wacht benieuwd af. 1 2 3 4 klinkt het. Ik had niet anders verwacht. Het eerste nummer gaat over den oorlog. Ik had niet anders verwacht. De cynische soundclip (van John Jughead van vroege Screeching Weasel) en het idee van een 2-delig nummer kwam wel onverwachts. Het werkt. NO MORE NIGHTMARES AND BITTER TEARS NOW!Om te eindigen spelen ze You Don't Wanna Be Like Me, ze zingen het samen met Joe King van the Queers (die ook meezingt op Motion Picture… en Storming Out). Een soort poppunkanthem:

Alkalinisch triumviraat (pt. II: 2002-2011)
De 4de beste band ter wereld is Alkaline Trio.

It's not even warm here. Not even ten degrees.
2003 betekende in Alkaline Trio-land de release van Good Mourning, de woordspelings-trend verderzettende. Good Mourning ligt ook musikalerweise sterk in het verlengde van From Here To Infirmary. Ik denk dat dit album net iets minder toegankelijk is in zijn geheel, hoewel het enkele van hun grootste hits bevat: This Could Be Love en We've Had Enough - waarschijnlijk niet ontoevallig de 1ste 2 nummers op de cd. Maar het volledige album heeft een donkerdere sfeer over zich hangen, een voelt aan als een muzikale stap terug.
Natuurlijk staat ook dit album vol goede nummers en enkele persoonlijke favorieten (Blue Carolina, Every Thug Needs A Lady). Er is een duidelijk contrast tussen Matts en Dans zang, zeker inhoudelijk, maar ook nog steeds stem-gewijs, en dat wordt eigenlijk heel goed uitgespeeld. Dit was de eerste release met Derek Grant, nieuwe drummer en sindsdien vast en toevoegende waarde.

Splits zijn super-punkrock. Tussen 2 albums door bracht BYO Records hun 5de split album uit, een tweedeling tussen Alkaline Trio en One Man Army. Het trio komt voort met een uitgebalanceerd vijftal van lichtverteerbare en iets droevigere nummers, aangevuld met een cover van een punk-band (met name The Damned). Ze zijn nog steeds zo punk als iets, maar ze dragen de punk naar een ander niveau dan in 1980.
Het eenmansleger draagt ons een meer upbeat kant van de split. Even punkrock, op een andere manier,

Crimson was Alkaline Trio's doorbraak-album. (Dat denk ik toch, en dat lijkt wel zo.) Crimson is ook absoluut één van hun beste platen. Opnieuw vinden de mannen zichzelf opnieuw uit. Een nummer als Burn laat een experimentele kant zien, een bewijs dat ze als band groeien en nieuwe technieken of composities niet schuwen. Piano's moeten zeker kunnen, of strijkers: waarom niet? Crimson werd goed ontvangen, het was persoonlijk het eerste album waar ik bekend mee geraakte en het spuwde enkele hits (Time To Waste, Mercy Me).
Het heeft een poppier image dan vorig werk, het is zeker toegankelijker en op een zeker manier heeft het zelfs een feelgood-sfeer. En daarin schuilt Alkaline Trio's talent voor songwriting: zij schrijven de meest catchy liedjes voor de meest donkere en droevige teksten. En die formule werkt enorm goed. Crimson's meezinggehalte ligt aanzienlijk hoog.

Vanaf dan was ik een echte Alkaline Trio fan. En van de moment dat ik zag dat en wát ze opnamen voor een nieuw album, was ik psyched. Agony & Irony -yup, woordspeling- kwam in 2008 uit, hetzelfde jaar dat ik ze voor het eerst live zag op Groezrock. Het album hield grote verwachtingen en loste die voornamelijk in. Hoewel een kwaliteitsvol album vol goeie nummers en interessante wendingen, bleef ik toch een beetje op mijn honger zitten. Ook nu weer blijft het een typische Alkaline Trio plaat maar het heeft ook hier weer een andere vibe over zich heen, en deze keer voel ik die minder. Agony & Irony is over het algemeen trager (i.e. mid-tempo) en misschien wat veiliger ten opzichte van vroegere platen. Desalniettemin is hun gevoel voor harmonie en vatbaarheid van de muziek nog steeds omnipresent.
Vooral de 1ste helft springt eruit. Het openingsnummer Calling All Skeletons leidt een perfecte sequentie in, maar die zwakt wat af naar het einde toe. Verder sluit het album prachtig af met Into The Night en wordt de repeat-knop niet geschuwd.

Whatever happened to Wonderland? Where'd Alice go?
Hun nieuwste release was This Addiction, uit 2010. In 2009 had ik de kans nog eens gegrepen om ze live te zien in AB. In 2010 heb ik ze niet live kunnen zien wegens andere semi-verplichtingen. This Addiction is, naast een tamelijk polyvalente titel, vooral noemenswaardig om de blazers in Lead Poisoning, een van de beste ideeën die ze al hebben gehad, mijns inziens. Net als Agony & Irony begint This Addiction heel sterk maar boeit het laatste deel me minder. Het zijn nog steeds goeie nummers, maar ik mis nog steeds iets, de teksten spreken me minder aan.
Enkele enorm goeie nummers als Off The Map en Dorothy worden bijgestaan door (sub-)standaard liedjes als The American Scream of Eating Me Alive. Over 't algemeen ben ik op een paar nummers na eigenlijk niet mee met This Addiction. Misschien is het een groeialbum en moet het nog meer groeien, maar momenteel zet ik liever iets anders op.

Verder hebben ze nog 2 B-sides albums uitgebracht, één selftitled (Alkaline Trio) en één genaamd Remains. Check ook die zeker uit. B-sides omhullen vaak enkele van de beste nummers (ik denk maar aan Cooking Wine, 97, Warbrain of Jaked On Green Beers).

You came to me like a dream. The kind that always leaves. Just as the best part starts, it ends so abruptly.
Alkaline Trio bestaat uit Matt Skiba, Dan Adriano en Derek Grant (drummer sinds Good Mourning). Ze spelen punk rock, met invloeden van pakweg 90's emo en invloeden van punk rock. Hun eerste releases waren 2 EP's, For Your Lungs Only en I Lied My Face Off, en 1 full-length album, Goddamnit. Hun stijl is hier erg rauw, wat ook wel aan de productie ligt. Zang die het midden zoekt tussen schreeuwen en zingen, wat me wel aan Jawbreaker en soortgelijke doet denken. Op deze eerste platen klinkt Matt (die hier nog het merendeel van de nummers zingt) nog heel breekbaar. De teksten doen menig fan ineenkrimpen ("Cringe") en zijn net cryptisch genoeg om emotioneel én cool te zijn.
Wat ook al meteen opvalt zijn de (ahum, geniale) baslijnen van Dan Andriano. Zo is de intro van Goodbye Forever een prachtig staaltje melodisch (en enorm snel!) basspel dat perfect samengaat met de gitaar. En die bas (accenten, octaven, kwinten, hammer-ons en pull-offs, slides, doordachte fills en ritmes) is enorm typisch voor de sound van Alkaline Trio, altijd al geweest. Het gitaarspel en de percussie zijn ook enorm cool, maar daar heb ik gewoon minder verstand van. Hun akoustisch werk, zoals Enjoy Your Day, toont een zuiver en puur talent, zowel muzikaal als qua compositie. Hoewel hun liedjes qua structuur niet 'out of the ordinary' zijn, zijn ze dat qua compositie, balans en simpelweg aanstekelijkheid wél.

Most relaxing thing I do: hang half-way out a third floor window and look at rocks if I fall out.
Hun 2de album, Maybe I'll Catch Fire, is -denk ik- een compliceerder album. Hun geluid klinkt nog steeds minimaal gepolijst en de snelle nummers wisselen zich nog steeds af met de mid-tempo nummers. Hun aandacht voor originaliteit en muzikale flexibiliteit blijkt uit liedjes als Madam Me en Sleepyhead. Atypische ritmes en accenten, melodische bas, ruige gitaar.
Heel belangrijk aan Maybe I'll Catch Fire is zeker het slotnummer: Radio. Hun 'signature song', hun grootste hit, 'fan favourite', 'live favourite' en kortom één van hun beste nummers. Het klinkt ook tamelijk anders dan alles wat ze voordien hadden gedaan - op Goddamnit en ook de rest van Maybe I'll Catch Fire. Bouwt prachtig op, megacoole lyrics en een gitaarlijn die haren doet rechtstaan. Ik krijg al kippenvel.

De magische 3de werd From Here To Infirmary, zowel een goede plaat als woordspeling. Het is waarschijnlijk mijn favoriet, ten eerste al omdat het hun beste nummers bevat. De productie/het algemene geluid is veel properder op dit album, en dit is het begin van hun eigen stijl. Als je deze plaat naast Maybe I'll Catch Fire legt, is een heel groot verschil in sound en stijl merkbaar.
Elk nummer op deze plaat kan mij de longen uit mijn lijf doen schreeuwen, zelfs als ik hier alleen op mijn kamer aan 't luisteren ben. Met dit album komt Dan Andriano als vocalist/zanger ook meer op de voorgrond, wat ook een pluspunt is. Dan heeft een doffere stem dan Matt, en ik vind dat cool. De laatste 4 nummers zijn extatisch en ik zou niet meer zonder deze plaat kunnen leven. Ik heb het gezegd.

Tussen 2 platen in kwamen 'de mannen' af met een split LP, met de 2de beste band ter wereld: Hot Water Music. Om dat te vieren schreven ze Queen Of Pain, waarschijnlijk één van hun top 3 coolste nummers - met een tekstuele allusie op This Is Getting Over You (I Lied My Face Off) - en While You're Waiting. Ze coverden Rooftops, en slaagden hier goed in. Niet beter dan het origineel, maar dat neem ik ze in het geval HWM niet kwalijk.
Hot Water Music coverden Radio en Bleeder en gaven daar ook een heel eigen draai aan. Hun stijlen liggen dicht bij elkaar, maar zijn elks heel distinctief. In dit geval zou je zelfs kunnen spreken van een streekgebonden sound. Hot Water Music staat voor de Gainesville-scene en Alkaline Trio speelt toch ook een belangrijke rol voor het muzikaal imago van Chicago.

Wat ook al meteen opvalt zijn de (ahum, geniale) baslijnen van Dan Andriano. Zo is de intro van Goodbye Forever een prachtig staaltje melodisch (en enorm snel!) basspel dat perfect samengaat met de gitaar. En die bas (accenten, octaven, kwinten, hammer-ons en pull-offs, slides, doordachte fills en ritmes) is enorm typisch voor de sound van Alkaline Trio, altijd al geweest. Het gitaarspel en de percussie zijn ook enorm cool, maar daar heb ik gewoon minder verstand van. Hun akoustisch werk, zoals Enjoy Your Day, toont een zuiver en puur talent, zowel muzikaal als qua compositie. Hoewel hun liedjes qua structuur niet 'out of the ordinary' zijn, zijn ze dat qua compositie, balans en simpelweg aanstekelijkheid wél.

Hun 2de album, Maybe I'll Catch Fire, is -denk ik- een compliceerder album. Hun geluid klinkt nog steeds minimaal gepolijst en de snelle nummers wisselen zich nog steeds af met de mid-tempo nummers. Hun aandacht voor originaliteit en muzikale flexibiliteit blijkt uit liedjes als Madam Me en Sleepyhead. Atypische ritmes en accenten, melodische bas, ruige gitaar.
Heel belangrijk aan Maybe I'll Catch Fire is zeker het slotnummer: Radio. Hun 'signature song', hun grootste hit, 'fan favourite', 'live favourite' en kortom één van hun beste nummers. Het klinkt ook tamelijk anders dan alles wat ze voordien hadden gedaan - op Goddamnit en ook de rest van Maybe I'll Catch Fire. Bouwt prachtig op, megacoole lyrics en een gitaarlijn die haren doet rechtstaan. Ik krijg al kippenvel.

De magische 3de werd From Here To Infirmary, zowel een goede plaat als woordspeling. Het is waarschijnlijk mijn favoriet, ten eerste al omdat het hun beste nummers bevat. De productie/het algemene geluid is veel properder op dit album, en dit is het begin van hun eigen stijl. Als je deze plaat naast Maybe I'll Catch Fire legt, is een heel groot verschil in sound en stijl merkbaar.
Elk nummer op deze plaat kan mij de longen uit mijn lijf doen schreeuwen, zelfs als ik hier alleen op mijn kamer aan 't luisteren ben. Met dit album komt Dan Andriano als vocalist/zanger ook meer op de voorgrond, wat ook een pluspunt is. Dan heeft een doffere stem dan Matt, en ik vind dat cool. De laatste 4 nummers zijn extatisch en ik zou niet meer zonder deze plaat kunnen leven. Ik heb het gezegd.

Tussen 2 platen in kwamen 'de mannen' af met een split LP, met de 2de beste band ter wereld: Hot Water Music. Om dat te vieren schreven ze Queen Of Pain, waarschijnlijk één van hun top 3 coolste nummers - met een tekstuele allusie op This Is Getting Over You (I Lied My Face Off) - en While You're Waiting. Ze coverden Rooftops, en slaagden hier goed in. Niet beter dan het origineel, maar dat neem ik ze in het geval HWM niet kwalijk.
Hot Water Music coverden Radio en Bleeder en gaven daar ook een heel eigen draai aan. Hun stijlen liggen dicht bij elkaar, maar zijn elks heel distinctief. In dit geval zou je zelfs kunnen spreken van een streekgebonden sound. Hot Water Music staat voor de Gainesville-scene en Alkaline Trio speelt toch ook een belangrijke rol voor het muzikaal imago van Chicago.
