And now for something completely different.

Hey guys, guess what?! I went to a rock show. A legitimate rock show. It was insane. In different ways. Here's the story.

My destination was the Ancienne Belgique (AB) in Brussels. A mega big venue, fit for rock shows. I've only been there one other time, for Broadway Calls/Alkaline Trio a couple years ago and that was fine. That was a punkrock show. But this was different. I arrived on the corner and saw all these people standing outside. Well, I'll be damned. I had to fucking wait in line to get in. It was like in the movies! Super bummed of course, what the fuck was up with that.
Anyway, I got in after a few minutes of waiting. I showed my ticket, everything alright. I walk up and what the flying fuck, I'm being checked. Like, the patdown they do on the airport. Holy smokes, guys, I though I was going to a rock show, not another continent. My bag's checked as well cause god forbid if I'd brought a drink in. I'd bring the whole place down to bankrupcy. Fucking hell.
I'm finally inside of the venue and I realise why they check people for drinks. Drinks at the bar were fucking € 2,5 a piece. I can have a nice pizza for the price! I'm not a cheap prick but that's a bit much, no? Another impression was the Rise Against merch guy. I think he used to be a marketcramer (dutchism) because he was all yelling and selling t-shirts for 20 fucking euros. The fuck. At this stage I was almost regretting I ever came to a rock show in the first place. It's not my natural habitat. I had no company either, like a lot of times but it's pretty hard to meet people when there's 2000 of 'em, it's pretty hard to find people who you know are there to chat a bit, the show sold out in like 2 hours so some of my buds didn't get a ticket, and it's downright impossible to just sit at the bar and drink because I'll go out flat broke. I don't care about going to shows by myself, but it's pretty silly at such rock shows.
Anyway, cool thing about rock shows: they're organized damn swell. "19h15: first band" You can count on it. So no running late and ultimately missing some band because you need to catch a train. Nope, that was good.

Now, for the fun part of the evening: the bands. First up was one of my favourite bands nowadays: Touché Amoré. It's a complete enigma how they got on that tour but I'm stoked for them they get such a chance. I talked to their singer, Jeremy, for a minute after the show and he was also completely confused.
The show, as said, started at 19h15 and they blasted right into it with a song I didn't expect (i.e. not ~ or And Now It's Happening In Mine) but I don't remember which one. They were tight. They were amazing. Played through almost all of their songs in half an hour. Song by song they got me singing along, being glad to see 'em. It was intense. Of course, the entire stage was about as big as the venues they normally play, but that didn't affect their performance. They played a new song and that was probably the best part of the entire set. Epic, a long song for their standards and it got me goosebumps. "At least I tried." Wow. Then they raged through another batch of songs from both their albums and finished in style with Honest Sleep, something I did expect. What an amazing song, what an amazing band.
The 'kids' had no idea they had just seen the best band of the evening.

The next band was Architects. I had seen them at Ieperfest 2009 and I guess I though they were alright. So I was up for checking it out. Well, I guess 18-year old me was a silly fuck because holy smokes that was pretty bad. So I can be short about Architects: "not my thing".

The last band was Rise Against. They are a popular band now. I mean, they'd gotten pretty popular when they signed to Geffen for Siren Song I guess, but it seems to me Appeal To Reason and Endgame (for the people who stopped caring: those are the last 2 records) skyrocketed them into mainstreamspace. They played Rock Werchter, they have music videos and they can pull off selling shirts for 20 euros to hundreds of 'kids' (I saw an abundance of Rise Against shirts, it was almost sickening). I used to have 2 Rise Against shirts actually, but I gave them to a kid who started liking them more than me. He was also at the show but I didn't find him so that was a bummer.
Anyway, With the full Belgian Rise Against 'community' shouting 10 minutes before they had to play, the atmosphere was set. I was at an official, all-round, banal rock fucking show. People had the band shirts, they had banner AND I EVEN SAW GIRLS WITH SELF -MADE TANKTOPS AND WITH "<3 RISE AGAINST" FUCKING WRITTEN ON THEIR FUCKING ARMS LIKE THEY WERE FUCKING JUSTIN BIEBER. What the fuck. I don't have business with what the fans do but that was plain ridiculous. I'm pretty bummed I didn't see any boob flashes though.
As for the show: it was alright. Sure, they didn't play really tight. Sure, Tim's voice isn't what it used to be. Sure, the new songs all sound boring as hell. But it striked me better than expected. Vocals were really alright for me, Joe Principe is a hero and I'd sing along to the songs from The Sufferer & The Witness, aka "The album that's an exact copy of Siren Song Of The Counter Culture" aka "the album from when on they shamelessly started making the same record over and over again". Rise Against is now a rock band trying to write punkrock songs. It's a shame.
The setlist was a drag, they played Broken English off of Revolutions Per Minute, the only song of that record in the entire 1,5 hour set, 3 song off of Siren Song and a whole bunch of new stuff everybody was excited about except for me and a couple other 20-somethings probably. I was also really scared that, when he got out his acoustic guitar he'd play Hero Of Warn cause I resolutely don't like that song, but then he played the first few noted of Swing Life Away And I was all...

They rattled through a bunch of other songs that were alright and finished the night with Give It All. I think. No encores, that was good. Unless they would have played an encore of, say, Halfway There, Tip The Scales and Blood-Red White And Blue*. But no. Let me be clear, it was not a bad show, I quite enjoyed it, bif it wasn't for Touché Amoré I had never gone to the show. I'll leave it for the 'kids'. The "punk rock" 'kids'.

Got back to the station alright and took the train back. I listened to Nerf Herder and thought about how I'd gladly pay 25 euros to just see them.
Note to Rise Against: next time, take Nerf Herder on tour (although that'd be difficult, since they're not quite touring anymore).
Note to Rise Against fans: get a clue.

"punk rock rules, wijven sucks"

Thursday night is a night to go out, have a drink and generally enjoy yourself. And so I did. It all started with some fine punk rock. Punk rock is inherently a good time.
Rock Café was the place to have been.

I arrived a little bit into F.O.D.'s set, but ultimately I caught most of it I think. Coolness! Really dig these guys, good tunes, good show, solid skills, great energy and a fun sound. Some cover songs, like Frenzal Rhomb, Blink 182 and another one I guess. Their own jams were pretty damn good as well. The guys are on a roll, playing a lot of shows lately and I'm stoked I finally got to see one. Whoo!

Next band was the Slovenian band Real Life Version. As usual I had no idea what to expect other than "punkmuziek" and as usual I was like like "whoa, this is really good". And it was really good. Vocals didn't pull through entirely but I really dug this band. Fast riffs, nice melodies, pure punkrock. I totally forgot to buy a cd but I think it's a really good one! The second Slovenian band I saw in my life I think (the other one was Soey) but I'm thinking there's a good vibe in the Slovenian air.

The pörno kings

The Sex Toys just released a new EP. This past weekend they played various gigs to promote it and they will continue that in the future. I caught 'em yesterday in De Blokhut, a cosy bar on the Oude Markt in Leuven.

The were the only band to play, but it was fun. They're pretty good. Like a Belgian NOFX (which is weird, cause Gino's Eyeball is already the Belgian NOFX). They take influences from other bands too. For instance, they played neat covers of Teenage Bottlerocket, Zatopeks, the Misfits and even Motorhead's R.A.M.O.N.E.S. Cause you can't pass the Ramones.
The set was a good one, fast, some ska-ish parts, but consistent punk rock. The new songs sound a lot better than the old songs, a lot more "Sex Toys"-ish rather than "insert generic comparison band"-ish. Backing vocals were pretty much lacking due to intense playing and partying all weekend, but the show itself didn't suffer from it. They're funny, they brought their Kempen fanbase into the bar and tried to start a party but that wasn't a great succes.
Well, it was a Sunday night so that's what you get.

For who is shame?

Yesterday was the official release-show for The Dutch Rudders' EP called Shame Is For The Weak. It was a great line-up but due to work and a small train delay I didn't get to enjoy most of it.

I stumbled in right when The Dutch Rudders ended their set, with the title track Shame Is For The Weak. It was pretty insane. People were going wild. This band is really good and I like them because of that. The new EP rules, buy it from Skintight Records!

Dead To Me also played but I generally don't really care for them and their set was kinda boring, except for a couple of songs. Not my cup o' tea.

Most importantly I had a good time though, with the punk rock buds. Sold quite a fair deal of magazines, which is supercool.

Sojos and Sounds

Whoa, totally forgot to write something about this pretty cool show last Saturday.
Sights And Sounds toured with Constants and dropped by at the Sojo club in Leuven.

I arrived when Musth was about halfway into their set. Musth is bad-ass. Actually probably the best band of the night, to my taste. They play post-metal, sludge, kinda heavy stuff. I don't know what to call it, doesn't matter. They're groovy, they're loud, vocals are amazing and they sure know how to write a great song ánd to create an interesting soundscape with it. Buy their album Padjelanta. I didn't cause I had spent all my money already, bummer-ish. Next time!

Then Constants came up. They performed a show with the help of samples. Pretty weird. They weren't half bad. They were, though, half good. Half of their set was interesting and good, the rest kinda dragged and became boring pretty quick. I don't like to say such things because I tend to respect every band that makes an effort of creating original music and going out touring and working to get it out and I tend to support them by seeing their performances (while a lot of people apparently went out smoking or something), but it just wasn't my cup o' tea. So yeah, semi-experimental semi-metal, not bad, not amazing. Good guys.

Headliner was Sights And Sounds, who feature Comeback Kid's singer. I'm no Comeback Kid fan in any way actually, so that didn't do much for me. I didn't even like his voice at the start. Further on it blended more into the music and I got used to it. I guess he has a great voice cause he's a singer, but "gustibus and coloribus...", right? Totally. Musically, really good. It's not specifically bound to a genre. It's like indie rock but heavier, or post-metal-something but smoothed down. Cool show, cool dudes.

The Ultimate Facebook

Long before the Facebook took over our lives, in 1994, a rock band by the name of Ultimate Fakebook came to life. 3 years later they put out their debut album and in 1999 (the year like which you're supposed to party) they released an album called This Will Be Laughing Week.
I've recently discovered this record on soem power pop blog probably. And I was like "I'll give it a listen". Being all "yeah, not bad." I gave it another listen. And another one. And now I find myself genuinely enjoying this album. It's become "playlist official".

So, 3 guys playing power pop/rock 'n' roll music. And they made this record. More than 10 years ago. They did a good job.
They start with a bang and grab the attention of the listener straight away with delightful guitar chords, nice but strong drumming and and a dude singing. And you're like "oh, this is catchy." and "I think I'm hooked". The first song is just a real fresh, hitting starter, semi-mellow, semi-upbeat and the chorus displays the singer's range of voice immediately. Or maybe his lack of range. He does these octaves that sound loike he almost can't reach them. I think he can, but there really aspirated. Anyway, he's a great singer, definitely for the power pop genre and I like what he does with his voice.
The record continues and with Tell Me What You Want it embarks on probably the catchiest song. Just that hook in the chorus, the vocal melody and harmony and those 4th-count-stops (i don't know how to call it) just make it a really infectious hit song. Great for singing along, but if you're not good at singing I'd keep it to yourself cause it's pretty intense. Further on more rocking pop hits pass the digital needle (I downloaded the record, so yeah...), and in Broken Needle the singer even uses this really high voice so I guess he's really capable of singing really good. (man, I'm making so much sense right now.)
the, time for the OBLIGATORY BALLAD. A quick Google search teaches me that there are a lot of people thinking this is a Starting Line song. Well, people who think that: it's not! This is, however, a really awesome song. It's slower and more candy-coated than the rest, but it fits the gab and shows these guys are great songwriters and can push any kind of song to a catchy pop level. I'm still in love, but I'm one of a million hearts you'll someday break. That's a damn spot-on lyric. And there are a lot of good lyrics on the record. Some identifiable, some weird and some just fun.
Back to ROCKING with Soaked In Cinnamon. Whoa. This whole song is soaked in cinnamon. So sweet. The title track basically breaks down the album as a kind of acoustic interlude. And near the end I'm beginning to hear some filler. The second "half" of the album isn't as strong as the first one. Songs like Little Apple Girl, Real Drums and I'm All Out Of It now are really good, but some of the others don't pack the punch that the first songs have. But they're totally made up for by Far, Far Away, an incredibly catchy song about Star Wars. So, yeah, the second part has really great moments but sometimes it's weaker than expected. Still hella catchy, no worries.

All in all, This Will Be Laughing Week will get on my iPod thingy and I'll listen to it a lot more because I'm digging it a lot. If you're a fan of great pop rock/power pop, good singing, catchy rhythms and great melodies you'll have to check it out. I'm off to check out the rest of their albums, I'll let you know if they're also worth your while!

Everyday I'm shuffling.

I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF EXAM PERIOD AND ALL I DO IS GO TO SHOWS I'M SUCH A REBEL.
Actually, it's nice to be able to enjoy a gig once in a while in between studying. So yesterday I treated myself on some fine-ass punk rock in the oh so (in)famous Rock Café.

First band up and atom was Charlie Bit My Finger, a Belgian pop punk rock band much alike Blink 182 I guess? Good stuff, actually, I was digging it. Last show with their singer I was to understand. Put on a good show, they looked motivated and some tunes were really catchy. I think I'll keep my eyes open for this in the future.


La bande séconde was Truro. I had already seen them once! They have an EP out and the songs are definite jams! Obviously they've gotten better, I really like the harmonies and dual vocals. It's pretty technical stuff, which is sometimes hard to get through to me because my mind likes simple things. But it sounded great!

Last band was The Shuffle, and they were more of a straight-up heavy punk rock band. The singer was wearing a Living Daylights shirt, and their music kinda sounded similar I think? Correct me if I'm totally wrong. I really dug them, interesting songs and song structures. They also have an EP out so buy it guyz and galz!

Cool show. I always like Kickass shows cause they're always cool although I never know any of the bands.

Vagina in this place

Yesterday was Cut Here!'s last show. I attended 2/3rds of it. What a shame, cause the other 3rd was bound to be really good, and so it was apparently. Anyway, I'll stop crying over that, I saw 4 bands and hung out quite good.

First up was King Terror. Not really my thing. It wasn't bad and they had interesting songs, to say the least, but the masks and the pretty extreme statements and all are not what I look for in bands. But if you like music that is faster than the fastest music you know, chekc out this band. Members of Vuur, I have heard. So, for the fans...

Next up were the PDS with a fast set, cause otherwise they wouldn't fit in the bill for being too poppy perhaps. Anyway, I really like this band and was stoked to hear some songs they don't always play so hooray for Fokkie, Hey Boermans, and the Dwarves' "Let's Fuck" among others. Great set. I fell down and hurt my leg. Boo hoo.

Then Scheisse Minelli was on stage. I'd never seen or heard them but boy, they're great! 80's stuff, hardcore punk, and they put on a cool show. Nothing else to say, cool band!

Lastly I saw Cut Here! playing their final show. Great show. I recall a Minor Threat cover and a Circle Jerks cover and of course their own songs. They were a good band, go download their EP on slambrigade.be and, I don't know, maybe give it a listen. It's okay.

I missed Reproach and Sunpower, which is a major bummer.

I just barely caught my last train. I had to run like hell. Man, that sucked. Fuck my life, right?
